Description:Shaved head with the tips of the black hair line just visible. He wears closely-fitted leather armor of the Jade style, made of leather. He is of medium height for a human, on the taller side for those humans of the jade empire. Slender, but still presents a stern, tough look. He usually wears a closely cropped goatee. He is a perfectionist, often a man of few words, and usually good at hiding his emotions.

L4E-Jin

Jin

Background:Jin has traveled to Daunton from the far lands of the Jade Empire, fleeing as a fugitive.

A member of the Ashikaga Clan, Jin's great-grandfather was retainer to the last Emperor of the Jade Empire. Even as the Emperor became twisted, the oath of loyalty kept the Ashikaga clan as servants to the human leader. Jin's grandfather was killed by the Dragonborn General who led the overthrow of the empire, and the Ashikaga clan was cast out from the position of prominence and striped of their titles. In the years since, Jin's clan was all but destroyed; as punishment for their support of the human emperor, the Ashikaga clan was assigned to serve as foot soldiers for Lord Kresh Ashure, a dragonborn commander whose territory lies on the front against the dangerous Oni, and much of the clan was killed in combat against the Oni.

Yet, Jin's father, Kuranosuke, had escaped this fate. An excellent spy against the Oni, Lord Kresh put him to work against his political enemies within the remnants of the empire. At first, this missions were just to gather information to use for extortion. But over time they developed a more lethal purpose, and Kuranosuke became Lord Kresh's assassin. As Jin matured, he was trained by his father, conscripted in the army just as his father, being groomed as a second spy for the Dragonborn. Father and son believed this work could redeem their family name and return their clan to prominence, but it was not to be.

Lord Kresh ordered Kuranosuke to dispatch a political enemy. But upon locating and identifying his target, he found it was a young dragonborn child: the only direct heir to an ailing rival lord. Lord Kresh believed he could claim this rival's territory with the child heir eliminated. Jin's father returned, questioning and then refusing the order. Lord Kresh demanded his command followed, and when Kuranosuke refused once more, Lord Kresh ordered the guards to kill him.



"Kuranosuke is dead, in the end a traitor, just like the rest of your clan," Lord Kresh bellowed.

Jin's repeated the words in his head, 'Kuranosuke is dead... my father...' His heart raced, not understanding.

"You will obey me, or suffer the same fate," Lord Kresh said. "Find Gresha Freloth in the Ji-ho Prefecture. Eliminate him. He is corrupted by the shadow. Do not be fooled by his age, as your father was."

Jin could not speak, but nodded his head in fear. The Lord and his troops left abruptly. What could he do? The words still echoing in his head: 'Kuranosuke is dead.'
...

Jin awoke in a startle, his hands gripping tightly the hilt of his swords, his right foot ready to spring him in to action. He looked around, tensed, and then relaxed. The dream was vivid, remembering the dragonborn Lord speaking of his Father's death. His father's murder. That had been the end, Jin remembered, the final act which drove him from his old life, drove him from Jade to this place: Daunton.

The weary ronin had seen his father's body before he left. Beaten and broken, the older man had hardly been recognizable. His possessions stripped. His father had laid discarded outside the keep, like a criminal, like an Oni. It was then that Jin saw the Shadow not in his father, but in the Lord Kresh. He knew what had to be done, for his father and for himself. Jin had moved through the camp, searching until he found the guard who had looted his father's body. He cut the man down from behind, not giving him a chance to defend his actions. He reclaimed the prayer beads his father carried, passed down from generations before, as well as the ancient Katana Kuranosuke carried. Forged by the emperor's own smith, the gift had been bestowed upon the family for loyal service in better days long past. Well-worn, but well maintained, Jin now carried the family blade, along with his own more recently crafted weapon. He would have reclaimed the armor as well, another family treasure, but footsteps and hurried voices drew closer.

Jin had ran, having to injure (or perhaps kill; he did not stay to find out) several guards in his escape. The ronin had fled, branded a thief, a killer, and a traitor. Jin still felt shame for his betrayal. A true follower of Bushido would have killed himself before dishonoring his Lord and his family. But Jin had fled, and in his heart he felt a coward.

In this new place, the ronin sought redemption for his past, a new life. It was the best he could hope for.



Since arriving in Daunton, Jin has made a few allies while adventuring. Jin considers Rujah, a dragonborn, as his closest ally; while Rujah might not agree, Jin feels a bond with the creature, since he spent his life serving under dragonborn.

While he has been in Daughton, Jin has not kept up his practices in awareness. He used to practice with his father daily, to avoid being surprised. Instead, he has spent all his time training to fight using two swords, perfecting the art of Niten Ichiryu. While he has lost some of his sharpness in spotting hidden enemies, he has become a formidable two-blade warrior.


Hooks:

  • Wanted: Jin is a wanted man in the Jade Empire. Outside of the Jade Empire, only a bounty hunter or glory hound would likely look to capture him.
  • Lord Kresh: The dragonborn lord in the Jade Empire controls a vast underworld group. He might employ these assets to get revenge on Jin.
  • Ancient Blade: His father's sword is an ancient Katana. It could have special power yet to be unlocked (perhaps as reward from the GM in lieu of other loot). It could also have bad traits as well, such as drawing the Oni and over evil creatures like a magnet.
